Review: The Muppets (2011)

I adore the Muppets, so of course, on November 23, my family and I headed out to the theater to see the new movie. We were first in line when they started seating folks, because yes, I'm that much of a geek, all ready with our popcorn and coke. And I loved it!! Gary lives in a small town with his brother, Walter, a puppet who dreams of being one of the Muppets he's seen on TV. Gary decides to treat His girlfriend, Mary, with a trip to LA. Walter of course has to tag along, since that's where the Muppet studio is. When they arrive at studio it's more or less falling down, and a creepy, evil millionaire, Tex Richman, is planning to tear the theater down to drill for oil. I don't quite understand the whole contract bit, but the Muppets have to raise $10 million to buy back the theater, and they only have a few days to...

Thursday’s Tale: Puss in Boots (2011)

At this point, I feel an obligation to see the fairy tale remakes that have been populating both the tv screen and the theaters, at least that's the excuse I gave my husband for wanting to see Puss in Boots. In truth, I've had a crush on Antonia Banderas for years and the fact that he was again voicing this character first introduced in Shrek 2 made it a must-see. We did not see the 3D version, just the normal one. I've mentioned before I'm just sick of 3D and I'm so glad our theater has begun offering options. First off, though, this version of Puss in Boots has little in common with Perrault's story, other than a cat that talks and wears boots. In this fractured fairy tale, a whole batch of Grimm and Mother Goose characters show up, but none follow the traditional storylines. This spaghetti western opens in a tavern, with the patrons and barkeeper suggesting potential places for...

Thursday’s Tale: Hoodwinked Too! (2011)

Last week, I looked at Nekane, a Red Riding Hood like character. Sticking with that theme, this week we watched Hoodwinked Too! starring none other than Red, this time a wise-cracking kung fu fighting smart girl. Now I liked the first one, how the same story was told through several points of view, but this sequel was just okay. Red's training with the Sisters of the Hood when she is called back to the HEA (Happily Ever After Agency). Granny's been kidnapped along with two children, so Red and Wolf are paired to save her. The plot line's goofy, it revolves around a magical truffle that can make a person unstoppable. But I do like the villains, a pair we usually consider helpless victims who barely survive their fairy tale. Here they are not innocent helpless children lured into a mistake. They are the masterminds, luring Granny into their grasp. It wasn't an outstanding movie, but it was fun enough. Thank goodness we...

Movie Comments: Red Riding Hood (2011)

David and I went to see Red Riding Hood this past weekend. Amber was spending the night at a friend's house, so it was the perfect opportunity for dinner and a movie. I warned David before we went that I wasn't making any promises, that it might be lousy, but I really wanted to see it. I know the critics didn't like it, but I have to say that we both enjoyed it. It wasn't outstanding, but it was fun, entertaining. The story strays from the original tale, pretty far actually; it has to to make it to a full-length movie. Red Riding Hood's name is Valerie, and she lives in the medieval town of  Daggerhorn, a town that lives in an uneasy truce with a werewolf. They leave out the best of their livestock every full moon and the wolf doesn't kill anyone, until one day. A girl, Valerie's sister, is found dead, killed by the wolf, and events...

Movie – Red (2010)

Red (2010) Retired, Extremely Dangerous David and I watched Red over the weekend. I'm not sure how I totally missed it when it was in the theaters, but it just never hit my radar. I have to say I loved it. Bruce Willis plays Frank Moses, a retried CIA agent living a quiet life in Cleveland until a hit squad shows up at his house to kill him. From then on, he's on the run. He reassembles his old team, played by the talented Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, and Helen Mirren, to figure out what's going on and keep themselves from getting killed. He also has to bring along his love-interest, because her life is obviously in danger too. Great movie. Lots of action, explosions, shootings, kidnappings, but really, really hilarious, just truly enjoyable to watch. And a happy ending for all the characters you like. What more could you ask for? One of the funniest parts: (Helen Mirren's character is Victoria) Victoria (about Frank): ...

A couple of movies

We've seen a couple of movies recently, in the comfort of our own basement. Alpha and Omega (2010) Amber (11) has been wanting to see this one since the first preview we saw. If it has wolves, it has to be good. There's a girl alpha wolf and a boy omega wolf who get transported to a new park. They have to work together to get home, and of course fall in love along the way. Amber said she liked, I though it was so-so. Even Amber commented that she wished they didn't act so much like people. I did like that the girl was strong and a leader. And the whole opposites attract thing has been done over and over, but it's always pretty cute. The American (2010) David and I watched this and I think it officially lost me the next three movie picks. George Clooney, assassin in love with a prostitute, I though David would like it. I was wrong. He...
