Look Past the Ugly

I was watching the Property Brothers last night on HGTV. I find them a little creepy even if the renovations they do are nice. There's just something off about them, but that's beside the point. I don't know if it was during the actual show or a clip from another one, but someone stated, "You just have to look past the ugly," referring to the run down houses they transform into dream homes. I said to myself what a good motto, thinking about the mess my house usually is. (Yes, I have talk to myself, don't most people really?) But then I thought, that really is a good motto. "Just look past the ugly." It can apply in so many instances beside a house. People, for example. We're not all beautiful and some of us are downright ugly, but if you can look past that you might meet the kindest, funniest person you'll ever know. Or maybe the ugliness is on...

Tattoos

The other day, the topic at The Daily Post was tattoos. That's my tattoo. I got it done, oh, probably 13 years ago. One of the best decisions I've made. It just truly makes me happy, makes me smile. Few people see it aside from my husband, but that's not the point. I don't know if I can even explain why I love it, it's essentially a meaningless design in an unoriginal spot. I guess maybe it has something with the permanence of it. Okay, and I think tattoos are sexy. That's David's. Yes, he's my sunshine. I know - cheesy, but true nonetheless. I would love to get another tattoo. This time I think I would pick something with more meaning for me, no names or dates or coordinates, but maybe the first few bars of Ode to Joy or a quote from a book I love. Or a nice big semicolon on my inner forearm. ...

The One I Kept

As a kid, I had all kinds of toys- Barbies, My Little Ponies, Pound Puppies, Care Bears. Can you tell I was an 80s kid? But the big toy, the one that I desperately wanted for Christmas was a Cabbage Patch Doll. They were the popular toy that year, the one parents stood in line for, actually got into fights over, the one that was impossible to get. I was so not getting one. But I was a kid so there was still that little bit of hope niggling in the back of my head. And what do you know, Christmas morning there was that present, and I just knew what it was. A Cabbage Patch Kid! My grandma had managed to get one for me. And do you know it's the only toy from my childhood that I've held onto all these year. I forget her name, I'm ashamed to admit, but she's on the right above. Her original outfit...

Make a Difference

According to the American Red Cross, a pint of blood can save up to three lives. I didn't need to know the statistics to know that donating blood is a good thing, a way to help others that really, in all truthfulness doesn't take much time, energy, or money. So why had I never donated blood before? I'm a wuss and a scaredy-cat. Every year our VBS supports a charity and this year it was the Red Cross. The kids brought in donations, heard about all the work the Red Cross does, from blood donations to disaster relief, and encouraged to tell their parents about a blood drive that was held at our church on Thursday of that week. So, I was already going to be there, Amber would get a prize, I figured I should do it. I do have to thank two wonderful women at our church who told me what to expect, and really gave me the kick...
