Sherlock and Sushi

Last weekend, we went out to Columbus to visit my brother and his family. Okay, actually I wanted to see the Sherlock exhibit at COSI. It was fun. The story is, Sherlock is busy and needs your help solving a case. You get see the scene of the crime and then use "cutting-edge 19th century techniques of forensic science" to try to solve the mystery. You guys know I'm a sucker for anything Holmes-ish. We checked out the Arts Festival for a while and then went to dinner at Akai Hana. Eating sushi has been on my bucket list for a while, and since David is not a fan and Amber won't eat fish period, my brother was my best bet for help with crossing it off. He and I split a "party boat" and I was pleasantly surprised, most everything was yummy. Definitely something I'll have again, except the salmon roe, that was nasty.  ...

N is for Not Gonna

I have a bucket list of things I want to do, but I've never made a "Not Gonna Do It" list. Here goes. I may add to it as time goes by. I'm not gonna feel guilty about not baking desserts for activities at church or school - store-bought is fine. Ditto with covered dishes. I'm not gonna buy things from every kid who is fundraising for some activity or other. I'm not gonna work in the concession stand at the football games. I don't want to and there are plenty of other parents. I'm not gonna complain about the stupid little things that get on my nerves at work anymore. It's not worth my energy. I'm not gonna put impossible things on my list. I'm not gonna avoid fried foods. I like them. And pasta and bread. I'm not gonna prioritize housework over exercise. I'm not gonna eat grapefruit or grape leaves or puffer fish. I'm not gonna drink tea. I don't like it, even if it is...

M is for Math

I am not a numbers person. I do not have dyscalculia, which is a kind of numbers dyslexia, that Mich posted about today over at Sick B*tch, and her post is certainly worth reading. I do sympathize with her, though. My mother and brother are both CPAs, my husband deals with numbers and calculations all day. They seem to think better in numbers and equations than I do. They're even more likely to win those stupid how many M&Ms are in the jar contests than I am. I'm not going to say I can't do math, because I can. I just have to work at it. Amber's taking algebra this year, getting As by the way, and will be in geometry next year and I'll be able to keep up, but it'll be the third time I've learned the subjects. The first was when I went through school. The second time was when my husband went back to community college. I have to relearn...

L is for List

L is for List

A List of L Words 1. Love - I love my husband and it also happens to be his birthday today. Happy Birthday, David! 2. Life vest - David's thinking of trying to fix up the old boat at the cabin, but this was taken last summer when we went canoeing. 3. Little -  I always think of all those little toys that you step on in the middle of the night. Happily, with Amber being older, that doesn't happen often anymore. 4. Leash - The only time the dog is off his is when he's in the house or the fenced in backyard. 5. Laundry - There's always some that needs done. 6. License - Mine is not so pretty. 7. Lightning bugs - I still like catching them, but I don't stick them in jars anymore. 8. Legs - My legs were a little tired at the end of the run this morning 9. Lighthouses - We saw a couple on vacation in 2011.                              10. Lake - We...

K is for Kilometers

K is for Kilometers

Americans, in general, don't use the metric system. We learn it in middle school. I know this because Amber had to learn it last fall I think and she had some odd phrase to help her remember the prefixes - something about King Henry, I think. I have to admit that it was a lesson my husband had to help with because I'm not any better at it than she is. I measure distance in inches, feet and miles, liquids by the cups, quarts and gallons, spices by the tablespoon or teaspoon. I know a meter's about 3 feet, but that's it. However, tomorrow, metric matters. My husband and I are running in the Pirates Charities 5K. Yes, it's 3.1 miles, and when I run through town or at the track I count miles, but tomorrow it's kilometers. It should be fun, if a little chillier than I would like. In addition to the commemorative t-shirt we also get complimentary tickets for...
