Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

Think of your blog as a mirror: what does it reveal? Consider your blog name, theme choice, design, bio, posts… what does every element tell you about yourself? The title of my blog is pretty self-explanatory. This is my space to write about what I want to, although it is mostly about books. I like the quote from Holbrook Jackson I included too. "The end of reading is not more books but more life." I like to believe reading helps you enjoy life more, learn more about the world and people around, experience places and things outside of your own circle. Books can inspire ideas, begin journeys. I also write about fairy tales or folktales weekly, which fall into the same general category. They are the stories that help define us as people, that have shaped our earliest memories, that are some of the first stories we're told as children. I like the kind of peachy and teal colors I'm using right now. They...

21st Century Citizen

21st Century Citizen

Do you belong in this day and age? Do you feel comfortable being a citizen of the 21st-century? If you do, explain why — and if you don’t, when in human history would you rather be? The other day the lights went out - for a whole 5½ hours. We gathered up some candles, played a board game, then hung out on the patio with a small fire. But it was not like "being a pilgrim except with cell phones and potato chips. We knew the electricity would be back on, probably sooner rather than later. And I'm glad. I definitely belong in this day and age. I love being able to communicate with people without ever actually talking to them, let alone seeing them. I love texts and e-mail. I like being able to carry a hundred books around with me on my Kindle without the weight of that many tomes, classics and modern novels. I like cement and paved roads and...

Performer or Bystander

Performer or Bystander

Do you consider yourself the outgoing performer or the appreciative bystander? Why? I consider myself the appreciative bystander. I'm not one to get up on stage but I love watching others perform in plays or musicals or even sports activities. I will clap and cheer and love every minute of it. However, I've been playing the organ at church on Sundays lately, definitely performing, but it's still a behind-the-scenes performance. The congregation hears the music but, for the most, doesn't see me since the organist is partly hidden by a wall. I play the piano for the choir anthems, but it's also rather tucked away. I'm not out there on the stage, and that's fine with me. What about you? Performer or bystander? ...

The Five Fave Foods I’d Choose

The Five Fave Foods I’d Choose

Imagine: You’re being exiled to a private island, and your captors will only supply you with five foods. What do you pick? Exiled to my very own private island, poor me. And of course, my poor husband's with me, because obviously he helped with whatever got me exiled in the first place. Days spent reading on the beach, feet buried in the warm sand, or wading in the warm clear water. Evenings watching the sunset over the ocean, being waited on by a wonderful staff my captors also provided. And my five favorite foods to eat. I must have the nicest captors. My choices: Spaghetti and sauce - my mom's recipe Banana omelet topped with fresh strawberries Macaroni and cheese - preferably Kraft DiCarlo's pizza Apple crisp with some vanilla ice cream I'm sure my captors wouldn't mind supplying five drinks too. Water, obviously Coffee with a bit of vanilla almond milk Hot chocolate A red wine- I'm not too picky Dr. Pepper What would you choose? ...
